An abdominal hysterectomy is typical among women who have cancer or severe endometriosis, or who have excess scar tissue or a very large uterus. In this procedure, the surgeon will make an incision either across or up and down your bikini line. The uterus and cervix are removed.
A vaginal hysterectomy is performed when the uterus and small and easy to remove, but is not used if there is a chance that cancer is in the uterus, cervix or ovaries. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the uterus through the vagina.
A laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy utilizes a lighted tube through small incisions in your belly, which allows the doctor to see your organs. The doctor then uses surgical tools to cut the tissue around your uterus and removes the uterus through the vagina.
A laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy also utilizes a lighted tube through your belly, and removes the uterus in pieces.
A total laparascopic hysterectomy utilizes the scope and tools through incisions in your belly and removes the uterus and cervix in small pieces through one of the cuts.
